Technology
The Interactive board uses the latest advances in digital electromagnetic sensing technology. A small magnetic field is created over the surface of the board, which is activated by holding the specially designed pen in proximity of the board’s surface. The pen reflects a signal back to the board, which is then sent to the computer as an X/Y co-ordinate.
This enables the computer to understand where on the surface of the board the user is pointing, thus tracking pen movement just like a mouse. Use of this digital technology enables fast, stable and accurate tracking.
To facilitate this technology, a special pen has been designed, which is ergonomic, lightweight and cordless. Based on the Rotring Art pen, the pen has been designed to offer comfort and balance to the user, giving an intuitive, natural feel to every presentation. The Pen is battery-free so there is no need to worry about charging or replacing batteries. It supports both left and right mouse clicks and, used in conjunction with the software, enables users to have full control over their presentation including multiple pen colour selection, from a single device. Two pens are supplied with each board and additional ones may be purchased thereafter.
To enable the Promethean board to be used over a long period in harsh environments, it is manufactured with a tough Formica surface. The absence of a soft membrane type surface means that it is not touch sensitive and so cannot be used with the finger (or any other object). The boards surface is matt based and is ideal for use with digital projectors. This surface prevents projector "hot spots" and screen glare from reflecting back towards the audience.

Either way, our Activboard is designed to cope. Its just another of the advantages of having our kit designed by teachers. And then tested to the highest degree.
Made with a solid screen, little kids, or big ones, can safely lean on it or rest their hands against it when writing. Dirty or paint smeared hands make no difference to its performance.
Kick it... hit it... throw a coin at it... stick a compass in it... itll still carry on working.
We even heard of one accidentally moved on a car roof in a downpour - with no ill effect. (Though, please note, comprehensive though our warranties are, this would be excluded!)
Itll also happily cope with temperature changes. So, for example, heat in an uncooled classroom over the long Summer break wont... break it. Even at Uluru (Ayers Rock).
The secret? Sitting behind the screens is our specially designed electromagnetic grid.
Its unaffected by any damage to the screen surface.
And, by cross checking three separate sets of co-ordinates, it allows incredible accuracy.
On-screen tools, such as protractors, for example, can measure down to a single degree.
While our mouse pen writes just like a pen. And, with cursor, rollover, and click functions,
acts just like a mouse. Minus, of course, those nasty squeaking noises... from chalk.
